Background Info

Our History

Bethel Assembly of God is connected to a move of God that began on the north side of Pittsburgh back in the 1920’s.  This movement brought about a church that would eventually be called Evangel Temple.  Evangel Temple, within the past ten years, has merged with Ridgewood Assembly of God and the property was sold to City Reach.  In 1973, there were conflicts within leadership at Evangel and a group of believers formed a new gathering of Christians.  They became Bethel Assembly of God.  The church sought out a former pastor of Evangel, named William Bailey to serve as the first pastor of Bethel.

During the first year, a personal emergency arose in Pastor Bailey's life that led him to resign.  The church then found J. Clayton Sheridan to serve as the second pastor.  Shortly after that, Bethel purchased the ground that our current building sits on and built our present building.  The Lord did many great things as the church began to grow.

In 1981, Pastor Sheridan felt led to move on and he resigned.  The church elected Pastor John Holt in 1982 as the third pastor of Bethel.  He faithfully led the church for 18 years and the church continued to grow and impact the neighborhood.  The church flourished to nearly 400 in attendance and had two services.  In 2000, Pastor Holt felt called to move on to pastor a church in Philadelphia.

The church struggled to find his replacement and was without a pastor until 2002.  During this time, the church declined in size.  In 2002, Bethel elected Greg Hammond as the fourth pastor.  He served faithfully guiding the church through some difficult times and leading the church through a rebuilding process.  At the end of 2016, Pastor Hammond felt it was time to retire.

In January 2017, the church elected Danny LeVeck Jr. as the fifth pastor of Bethel.  He began to serve as pastor in February of 2017.  The Lord has begun a new work and we have been encountering the move of the Spirit in our service and at the altar and a deepening of our community and relationships.  There is a growing excitement of the vision that the Lord has given us and we are believing for great things!
